There are many good surf spots along the west coast of France. One spot in particular is Biarritz.

My friend and I went on a surf camp tour with SMASHED from San Sebastian, Spain to Biarritz, France. The SMASHED tours are small groups of about 7-10 people with local surfer bums as the tour guides. The guides are laid-back, fun guys and escort you around town in vans painted up graffiti-style.

The campsite we stayed at in Biarritz was called Fontaine Laborade. There are many locals and backpackers who were staying here, some looked like they had been camped out there all summer! Nice place to stay though. Very friendly people and the campsite is only 100m away from the beach. By the way, the campsite is complete with a restaurant/bar in case you don’t want to cook your own food.

The first day we didn’t surf because the waves were way too big for us beginners. However, we were able to swim and watch some of the pros show off their moves. That night, we hung out on the beach, drank sangria and saw some of the best fireworks I’ve ever seen! It was Bastille Day (France’s National Day) and they put on a very good show for everyone.

The next morning, we headed to ‘the Dunes’ to surf. The waves weren’t as big this day which was a good thing – it meant we had a chance against the ocean. It was extremely exhausting but very rewarding when you finally are able to get up and ride the waves!

After the successful surf day, we headed back to the campsite for supper, a late night swim, some more sangria and laughs around the fire. All in all this is a great trip and I highly recommend it if you are headed to southwest France.

In total – the surf trip is 2 nights/3 days and was only 45 Euros. This included breakfast, lunch, dinner, sleeping arrangements (tents), wet suits and surfboard rentals. Can’t get much better than that!
