Torres Del Paine in the Patagonia of Chile is ranked one of the top 5 hikes in the world, and it lived up to its world wide ranking. There are a couple different routes one can take through this large are of hiking trails and terrain. We choose to do the “W” as it is called, which is a 5 day hike start to finish. As well there is the “Circuit” which can take up to 10 days or more, and there are simpler 1 day overnight hikes as well to do.
You boat over to the park area from mainland, and as soon as you get off the boat you are greeted by a sign that explains in Spanish that there are no rescue crews coming in to help you if you get in trouble or hurt while you are hiking. You are entering into the hike at your own risk, and we saw that in action as we so many people twist ankles and sprain knees, and have no choice but to slowly make their way out to the nearest of the 2 exits/entrances.
That being said this is an absolutley amazing hike and experience. There is no guides, you go at your own pace as their are multiple campgrounds to stop at to setup for the night. You bring everything you need with you on your backpack as their are no shops for food or extra colthing or anything. Ther terrain is amazingly diverse as we hiked through forrest, long grass, through rivers and lakes, by glaceirs, straight up mountain climbs, narrrow clif edges and anything else you can think of. Als we hiked through rain, snow, sunshine, and some of the most ferious winds I have ever seen. So you have to be prepared to get you ass kicked for a solid 5 days, and you will come out skinny, tired, starving, and hurting but the experience and the things you see are worth every minute of it. Not to mention the beer at the pub after tastes fantastic!
