If you’re up for an eventful bus tour to see the Irish countryside, then a trip to Glendelough is the perfect day excursion. Glendelough is a catholic monastery that was first established in the 6th century, nestled in a valley with rolling hills and two beautiful lakes in close proximity. There are a couple of companies which run this tour, the one we chose was one of the cheaper ones (had a great student price of €20 for the day), yet the quality of the tour was excellent.
The bus picked us up in the morning in the centre of the city, and the tour normally lasts until five or six in the afternoon. The bus takes you down the coast, with a couple stops to give you the chance to hop out and catch a view of the ocean near the city. Once past the outskirts of Dublin City, the road leads into the Irish countryside, driving along narrow country roads and through hills and farms. There are a couple more stops along this leg, which allow you to explore small Irish towns and scenic pit stops. Once you arrive at Glendalough, you’ll get a chance to explore around the ancient monastery, and take a scenic walk to the upper lake, only a 20 minute walk away.
This was a great day excursion that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a mix of exploring outdoors, while learning a thing or two about Irish history!
