If you ever make it to Dublin (which you should definitely find time for!) a day trip out to the small fishing village of Howth will be something to remember. It’s only a 30 minute commuter train ride from the centre of Dublin, and was approximately €4.00 round trip. No matter what weather conditions are thrown at you (we saw it all), you’ll have a great time.
When we first arrived, the wind was howling, and the rain was storming down on us coming out of the train station, yet this didn’t discourage us from exploring the harbour. Walking out onto the rock jetty to the light house gives you a great perspective of the town and the geography surrounding you. After the storm had past, we ran into a friendly old Irish man, who recommended a hike around the back side of the village. From the lighthouse, he told us to walk straight back towards the main street, then up the hill ahead as you follow the coastline. It’s a good thing we did, because this hike was epic! You begin by walking along a small steep road, with these amazing homes perched a few hundred feet above the ocean. As you continue onwards, the terrain becomes more and more rugged, and every crest of the horizon you break past, the scenery becomes more spectacular. The path is nestled into the side of the steep terrain that falls down into the sea.
I recommend going there with a couple free hours to spend on the hike, because you’re going to want to sit down every time you get a new view to relax and take in our surroundings. We did the whole hike in around 3 hours, but most of this was spent admiring the landscape around us. The path will eventually veer right and start ascending up the hill, to which you’ll approach the top and get an amazing 360 degree view of the ocean and Howth below. Take a chance while you’re up there to view the maps which label other routes you can take, I didn’t get a chance to walk every bit of path while I was there, but then again it gives me all the more reason to go back!!!
