As an occasional student, La Ventana is a great place to go kiting on a budget. And the camping is one of the main reasons!
Instead of paying anywhere from $50-$100US per night for a hotel, you can camp right at the beach at the main campsite in La Ventana (across from Pablos) for 70 pesos per night. I should mention that this can be per group as well, so the accommodation is definitely affordable.
There are no “official” spots. It’s more a pick-your-spot and set up camp. The campsite is right along the beach, but the spots along the beachfront are usually occupied during the winter months. So, expect to find somewhere behind this row of beachfront campers, which to be honest, is probably better because the winds can get quite strong and the front row will provide some wind protection for the interior campers :)
There are washrooms with running sinks and toilets. There are also showers, correction, cold showers. There is no hot water, but you get used to the quick, cold showers pretty quick.
The entire campsite is surrounded by a fence and the gate is closed during the night. Personally, I found the campsite to be very safe. The locals and fellow kiters/windsurfers are very friendly. The first year I went to La Ventana, I stayed in the first arroyo – no gates and free :)
The campsite is close the beach to launch your kite and close a variety of restaurants (both in La Ventana and a short walk to El Sargento).
There is a wireless internet access provided from Pablos if you need to use the internet, but you have to pay and set it up there.
I think that is mostly everything. If you have any other questions about the camping/accommodation/eating/kiting/etc, feel free to comment and ask any questions in the comment section.
Thanks!
