Email written to family August 10th 2008:
We just got back from Berg Lake yesterday. For those of you who dont know, berg lake its a grueling 8 hour hike up Mount Robson-the tallest mountain in the Rockies.

Just thought id throw in some pictures of the last week or so…I dont think theyre in order at all, but this is berg lake, the trail up and down and some of our day hike. Once up to Berg Lake, there are a bunch of EVEN BETTER trails and view to explore and that is why I keep going back.

This wasn’t my first time to berg lake, we went two years ago around the same time. Its absolutely beautiful despite the 56 campers and busy trails. After a HOT 8 hour hell of a hike as you can see, there is still a whole mountain to be climbed…so this isnt a summit hike unless we had ice climbing gear and experience but from berg lake there are a bunch of other summits to climb. We spent our second day on another hike to a cave on top of a mountain…50m in it was frosted. The boys told me, I wouldnt go very far. Couldnt get any good pictures it was so dark and we only had one light…but it was pretty cool to see and cold to be in. Other than that it was filtering water, cooking, playing cards or wondering around…oh yeah and of course savouring the14 beer we hiked up. After the first time up I would not of been able to imagine myself doing it again it was that painful…and this time it was even more painful with a 75-80 pound bag, but the trail is worth the view and amazing feeling of being ontop of my world. We hiked a total of 58km in our 3 days…21 in and 21 out plus our extras. I dare anyone to do it…i would even go again. Today, i am too sore to do anything including laundry, ive ripped open the same blister about 15 times in 3 days and still cant feel my feet.

On the trail there are people of every age, obviously a lot of older people are in better shape than I am. Also kids being encouraged by parents on the trails! There are several camp sites to stop along the way to Berg Lake, but we liked to do it all in one day and then camp for the next 3 or 4 hiking the peaks before coming down.

Berg Lake is facilitated with a fairly large shack shared among campers with wooden stove and tables and storage areas. Please remember to exercise safety precautions before entering trails and to pack out all garbage.

Visit Mount Robson Provincial Park website for more information: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/mt_robson/

KM from base to Berg: 22Km
Time to hike: 7 hours average
Elevation from base to Peak (beyond Berg Lake): 3954m
Elevation from base to Berg Lake: almost 1700m

A Must DO if you’re in the Canadian Rockies!
