Just got home from a mini Easter road trip with myself. I left Victoria Saturday morning for Mount Washington and was snowboarding by 930. I am not joking when I say that I have NEVER EVEN dreamed of snow like this. A road carved in towering snow walls to get up to the hill (a snowplow was literally buried in the side of the road top to bottom) and sunny 9 degree weather. Ive always felt very competent in my snowboarding ability but have never been on snow like this so had to change gears…I got there with 60+ cm of fresh snow with a 6+meter base…It was fast and beautiful and best of all it didnt hurt to fall, was just energy consuming getting back up sinking with any sort of weight pushed on the snow. Jasper’s Marmot Basin (which I’m used to) was NOTHING compared to it, unbelievable, I was snowboarding over tree tops with a winter wonderland landscape -trees coated with snow and icicles and more snow -many were white with only hints of green like natural snowmen (not like the picture, I didnt take the camera with me to the top to be safe and not fall on it the wrong way so the pictures really do not do justice but…) AND at the summit the view was one side that looked familiar like Jasper (less rocky though) and the other side was vast OCEAN! Every run was fresh snow even though the hill was busier than they’d been all year claiming to be the best boarding conditions of the year! I found new trees each time and was able to surf them until i buried myself, it was a hoot…the only bad part was no one to share it with but had a blast anyways.
Time to get there from Victoria: 3.25 hrs
Cost for full day lift ticket: $64 CAN
Nearest town: Courtenay or Comox
Drive from Courtenay: 35-40 minutes to Hill parking
Cost for a inter-run beer: $5-$8
Terrain Park: 2
website: www.mountwashington.ca
The hill closes end of April and who knows what is in store for 2011 but this is where the 2010 Olympics should’ve been and I have high hopes for next season.
