Leaving from Sidney Vancouver Island headed East to the Gulf Islands you will find Portland Island. The only way to get there obviously is water transport. A perfect destination for kayakers, sailors or yachters. The island is maintained by Parks Canada and has various sandy/ fine shell beaches with ocean front tent sites.
I went only for one night but would have loved to stay for longer. Never too busy and plenty of space for privacy equipped with a very decent outhouse (toilet paper included!)
There is so much to explore on the island and although bears are not a problem, you may have a swarm of raccoon eyeballs on you if food is left out or chips are dropped. Just don’t get in between mom and babies and they are harmless.
Fires are not permitted on this island, but when you have a beach and a barbeque and summer weather, good company and a couple drinks, you don’t even notice.
All the beaches are beautiful swimming spots shallow enough to heat up by afternoon/night time and deep enough swim.
The only downfall of the island is the faint far off noise of the large ferry service from Vancouver to Vancouver Island or Salt spring Island…although, they only create waves to play in so I looked forward to them passing by on a calm day.
The boat ride there is an opportunity to be jealous of the rich people in the area who own entire islands. Definitely some jaw dropping sites!
